How to model

Professional modelling is a dream job for many, but it is not easy getting your big break. If you think you have what it takes to become the next Kate, Naomi or Cara, follow our tips on how to

model.

1. Figure out your niche

Modelling is not all about couture and catwalks. There are many great opportunities in lingerie modelling, catalogue modelling, music videos, hand or foot modelling and advertising.

2. Practice your poses

Identify your best angle, and work it. Take photos of various poses from different angles until you’ve figured out what works best for you. Work on your posture and practice your ‘walk’ in everything from high heels to flip flops.

3. Build your portfolio

Show your versatility with a portfolio of varied shots taken by a professional photographer. Make sure your portfolio shows a range of poses, including close up head shots and full body shots.

4. Join an agency

This is the easiest and most reliable way to make it in modelling. Find a reputable agency who can put you forward for jobs and offer you expert advice on the industry.

5. Be confident

Confidence is beautiful, and it comes across in photos. Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.

Modelling tips

Modelling isn’t just about having a pretty face. To be a successful, working model, you need to be committed, enthusiastic, dedicated and have a shining personality that sets you apart from the rest. Here are our 5 top tips that every model should know:

1. Be punctual

Photoshoots are expensive operations to put on. There are studio fees, photographer costs and equipment charges amongst other things. When you make initial meetings with clients, they’re going to want to know that you can be relied on to play your role in keeping things on time during a shoot.

2. Be prepared

For every shoot you attend, make sure that you bring minimal flesh coloured underwear. It’s also advisable to take your own makeup and hair product. Girls, always have a hair band that matches your hair, so you can show off your face if you need to. Most clients will prefer you to have an up do when taking head shots.

3. Build contacts

Even if you’re not right for one job, you may be perfect for something in the future. This is why it is essential to be polite, friendly and confident in every meeting. Make sure that you have a mini-portfolio, even if it’s postcard sized, that you can leave with every client you meet. If you’ve been polite and confident, they may well give you a call in the future.

4. Be comfortable

It’s great to be versatile as a model, but you should never have to compromise on your core integrity. If you are asked to do something that you don’t feel comfortable doing, don’t do it. You do not want these photos coming back to haunt you and your career in the future. To avoid any potential embarrassing and uncomfortable situations, sound out exactly what the job requires before you take it on.

5. Stay healthy

Modelling can be an exhaustive industry, with lots of travelling, long hours and exertion. Make sure that you look after yourself so that you can deliver when you’re on a shoot. Keep a healthy lifestyle and drink plenty of water to make sure that you always have plenty of energy. Try to avoid drinking and smoking (it’s not professional to turn up smelling of substances that could be transferred onto the clothes). Also, try to get enough sleep as this will ensure that you are looking your best at all times.
