CAN I BE A MODEL
How to model
Professional modelling is a dream job for many, but it is not easy getting your big break. If you think you have what it takes to become the next Kate, Naomi or Cara, follow our tips on how to
1. Figure out your niche
Modelling is not all about couture and catwalks. There are many great opportunities in lingerie modelling, catalogue modelling, music videos, hand or foot modelling and advertising.
2. Practice your poses
Identify your best angle, and work it. Take photos of various poses from different angles until you’ve figured out what works best for you. Work on your posture and practice your ‘walk’ in everything from high heels to flip flops.
3. Build your portfolio
Show your versatility with a portfolio of varied shots taken by a professional photographer. Make sure your portfolio shows a range of poses, including close up head shots and full body shots.
4. Join an agency
This is the easiest and most reliable way to make it in modelling. Find a reputable agency who can put you forward for jobs and offer you expert advice on the industry.
5. Be confident
Confidence is beautiful, and it comes across in photos. Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.
Can I be a model?
A lot of people will tell you that to be a successful model you need to be tall, slim, beautiful, and have striking features. To find work in high end fashion, it definitely helps to be tall and slender, because that’s the figure a lot of designers demand. The modelling industry, however, needs all kinds of models – in every shape and size – so if you’ve got your heart set on a modelling career but don’t have supermodel proportions, there is still plenty of other modelling work out there.
Modelling for catalogues can be easier to break into, because models are picked for the target audience the company wants to sell to. This is also true for the ever growing range of websites who need models to promote their products. Plus size models are also more in demand than ever, as attitudes change, while glamour modelling continues to offer opportunities for lingerie and swimwear models. Television commercials use all kinds of models and if you have a particular physical asset, like great eyes or lips, then being a body part model is another option.
Whatever type of model you want to be, however, you’ll need self-confidence and determination, to be successful.
